Near the one year mark of the Covid-19 Pandemic my mom @karentogo reached out to me and asked if I'd like to join a group of Toews (paternal side) women plan and execute a hiking trip. Two of my Dad's (6) sisters had expressed interest to my mom in joining her on a hiking expedition of some sort.
I jumped at the chance to join the group and on our first group call I said, "let's do this in Quebec where I can find a cabin we can rent in the woods". And from there the trip planning gathered steam.
Flights were booked in faith, before we even had reassurances that travel would be allowed. A cabin was found from the reduced options available due to at-the-time Covid restrictions.
I jumped at the chance to host far-flung family in my province and to introduce my aunties to camping and hiking at the edge of their comfort zone.
In a series of zoom calls we talked about objectives, timelines, location details, goals, and gear for the trip.
I prepared and explained the gear list. My mom planned and dehydrated some food.
And then in early September my aunties and my mom all flew into Montreal and in a flurry of airport pickups, family suppers, and airbnb rentals, we organized food, packed the gear into backpacks and drove to the farthest east corner of southern Quebec to spend an extended weekend together at Mont Megantic.
