Outsideways has a number of features to protect the personal security and privacy of members, their journals, and their content. These features are designed to provide a lot of power and flexibility, enabling members to have fine-grained control over the information that they share.
Journals have three possible visibility settings, which are described below.
Public journals have the following features:
Public journals offer the most flexibility with regards to the visibility and security of their content. Individual journal entries in a public journal can be set as public, protected, or private (Read more about public, protected, and private journal entries below).
Public journals are best suited for cases where the owner wants most of the content to be public, with the occasional protected or private entry.
Protected journals have the following features:
Individual journal entries in a protected journal can be set as private (Read more about private journal entries below).
Protected journals are designed for situations where the owner wants to restrict visibility to a select group of Individuals.
Private journals have the following features:
Journal entries have three possible visibility settings, which are described below.
Public journal entries can be viewed by anyone. Only public journals can have public journal entries.
Protected journal entries are only visible by members approved by the journal owner. Public journals can have protected entries, and all entries in a protected journal are protected.
Private journal entries are only visible by the journal owner. Public, and protected journals can have private entries, and all entries in a private journal are private.
Protected journal entries can have their visibility automatically changed to public after a specified period of time. This can be done two ways:
The location information of a journal entry can have different privacy settings from the journal entry itself. This allows the owner to be able to, for example, publicly share a journal entry but keep the location of that entry protected or private. As with journals and entries, locations can have the following visibility settings:
Public locations can be viewed by anyone. Only public journal entries can have publicly visible locations.
Protected locations are only visible by members approved by the journal owner. Public journal entries can have a protected location, and locations in a protected journal entry are protected.
Private locations are only visible by the journal owner. Public and protected journal entries can have private locations, and all private entries have private locations.
