Spending our first night here. We didn’t do any paddling today, just finished packing and driving to Kingston. We’re starting our journey at the Kingston Mills Locks, not quite the very beginning, on Lake Ontario but close enough.

My first closeup view of a lock. Gonna see a lot of these.

What makes the Rideau waterway so unique and the reason it qualifies as a heritage site is because most of the structures and locking mechanisms are original from 1830.

Parks Canada staff crank these locks open by hand.
