Finding the right gear to balance weight, durability and price seems to be nearly impossible... I'm fortunate enough to be able to have a blog where some people trust me enough to test their products... and for that I'm ever grateful!
My current gear list, which I'm quite pleased with is (top must have items):
Gregory Zulu 55
Big Agnes Fly Creek UL 3 (me, wife, soon-to-be child)
Grand Trunk Nano 7 hammock (if we don't take the tent)
Kelty Noah's Tarp 9
Big Agnes Buell 30 sleeping bag
Klymit Static V Lite Insulated
Sawyer Squeeze Filter system
JetBoil MiniMo OR MSR Pocket Rocket
Leki Cristallo trekking poles
Obviously footwear and clothing change based on the time of year...
I would love to hear your top items! Not to play the comparison game, but simply to see how others do it!

That is an absolutely beautiful photo. Where is that?
This was taken on a trail called King's River Falls near Witter, Arkansas.
It follows the river for a little over a mile and comes to this incredibly waterfall that has carved out the rock into a bunch of channels. You can jump off the falls into the pool below (only about a 15 foot drop). This field felt out of place on the trail as it just sort of *appeared*. In the very back of the field sits an old decrepit homestead. It was stunning.
You guys should make a trip down to NW Arkansas! You wouldn't be disappointed!
OK, I'll play :-) My current favourite gear is:
- GoLite down quilt
- Therm-a-rest NeoAir Xlite short
- Therm-a-rest NeoAir pillow
- TarpTent Stratospire 2
- Sawer Mini water filter
- Camelback Podium water bottle
- Rab Xenon puffy jacket
- Patagonia Houdini wind shirt
- Patagonia R1 hoodie
I have a variety of stoves, and while all of them are OK, I am not absolutely in love with any :-)
How do you like that Tarptent? I've only tried a tarp shelter once, and actually really enjoyed it!
We used that TarpTent for almost the entire length of our AT thru-hike, and it is still going strong. I absolutely love it, one of my favourite two-man shelters to date. We liked it so much, that when my oldest daughter wanted a solo tent for the latter part of our thru-hike, we bought a TarpTent Notch, which was also fabulous. The prices are good, they are extremely functional, and have a decent amount of room. I am a huge fan... if that hasn't become apparent.
