Day 25 Tri-Corner Knob Shelter to Davenport Gap Shelter
14.8 miles
We were out of camp at 7:40, we almost met our goal of 7:30. And we finished our hiking day at 4:40 again. We made great time for hiking nearly 15 miles, feeling pretty good about that tonight.
There are three families at this shelter. Three! We just met the Cox family whose trail name is Wolfpack. To have all these kids around is strange after the hiker demographic we've gotten used to - young, single, mostly men.
We hiked again today with the James family. This was motivating for the kids. I'm just happy to finally be coming into camp before 5pm.
We also hiked with Flipper and he's camping with us tonight.
Today we realized that we calculated one day off in our food planning before our next resupply so we may be short on snack foods. Thankfully, tomorrow we can buy some more snack foods at Standing Bear Farm.
Tomorrow we'll hike out of The Great Smoky Mountain National Park. The views have been really great, the camping restrictions not so much.
It's nice to see other families on the trail but three families in a shelter feels like two families too much. Too much noise, people and siblings. I'm just tired of people and need some space. Technically, I have some time to write tonight but I feel too out of sorts.
Davenport Gap Shelter is open on one side, similar to a lean-to, but because of the bears there is a chain-link fence forming a wall on this open side. Which makes me feel like we're sleeping in a cage.
