En route to the summit of Jay Peak.

Early into this hike and we are given a formidable challenge. We learn quickly that the designers of this trail had one goal in mind: the most direct route to the peak of every mountain. This translates to rather steep trails going up and dow with little flat ground to be found. The exposed ski slopes were pretty hot, the bugs were quite enthusiastic, and the cafe at the summit was closed. A lonely soda vending machine provided a small reward for our efforts.

The water for this camp was a crappy pump that was falling apart and needed priming to get it going. It only ever seemed to pump out as much water as we used to prime it, so we were suspicious of whether or not there was any water here at all. Eventually we managed to coax out enough of the yellowish stuff to make supper.

We are not even a day into this hike and the itinerary has already gone out the window (sort of). Due to the fabulous weather, we went several miles further to the next shelter to get a jump on the first day.

The northern terminus (aka Canada). Are there hidden cameras, drones, and alarms that go off somewhere if you wander north of this cutline? We will never know.
