Day 44 - Watauga Lake (via shuttle from Dennis Cove Road) to campsite

We said goodbye to cabin #2 at Black Bear Resort this morning. We made arrangements with the YWAM team to drive us back to where we got off the trail at Watauga Lake and to help us slackpack for the first 4 miles. We wanted to give @toesalad the best start back on the trail as possible.

Got started hiking around 8:30. The morning was beautiful with mist rising off the lake.

We picked up our packs from the YWAM truck at Wilbur Dam Road, where they were providing support to their own team.

Climbed the ridge for the rest of the morning. The morning mists turned into muggy heat. We met the Germans Joe and Runny Nose, who gave us bars.

We stopped early today, around 3pm, because of @toesalad 's foot and because of threat of thunderstorms. The rain hit just as the tents were set up.

I had time to take a sponge bath, which was nice after all the hot hiking today. The rain let up during the time @toesalad was cooking supper.

Just as we started to eat the Lost Boys walked through. It was so nice to see them again. We also saw Ungerwhere and Bamboo who are with YWAM.

It was a good evening. Supper was all cleaned up and I was in bed by 7:30.

December 26/17, my last trek of this favourite Gaff Point, NS hike for this year. So very happy to enjoy the rocky ocean beauty (and a bracing, brisk wind) with @reneetougas and @toesalad, @mypictograph.

Occasionally the trail is on a gravel road - nice without the mud!! Warm and muggy @hammerhead still has pack covered but the dripping has slowed down.@reneetougas and @toesalad walk off into the mist....

Spent about an hour hanging it on the pier at Brass Point Bridge (swings for larger boats) so @toesalad could take an important work phone call.

Loved the maple behind the Parks Canada sign.

@reneetougas picking raspberries- a surprise treat so late in the season! In the same area @toesalad saw the back end of a black ‘animal’ run into the bush - mmm, I wonder what THAT was?!

While we hunkered down at the shelter waiting out the rain, The Long Trail was building on its Ver-Mud reputation. @hammerhead @reneetougas @toesalad are navigating through stepping from rock to log to puddles...sunshine above helps!

We didn't make it to the summit of Mansfield because we didn't have crampons and the conditions were very icy. But it was a beautiful day for hiking.

Before we leave town this afternoon we need to spend some time at McDonalds doing video project and internet work. Kids hang out on the grass outside while @toesalad and I finish up our work indoors.

Almost to Goddard Shelter - great inspiration to push on seeing the message left by @hammerhead (45 indicating our anniversary years as of Oct!) who had pushed on ahead with @toesalad. I’m married to such a romantic xo

@toesalad usually does all our camp cooking. Another first for me, making my own camp supper. Would you like a little supper with your butter?

Rice, quinoa, dried veggies, vegetable seasoning, pepperoni stick cut up and butter.

We started off carrying our snowshoes since wearing snowshoes is only energy efficient when you truly need them, otherwise it’s just a lot of effort. Shortly after this photo @toesalad put in his snowshoes.

Ominous sky: view from the summit of Mont Royal. Thirty minutes later we were soaked in the descent. All part of the fun with @brienne, @celine, @reneetougas , @toesalad and sister Ruth visiting from Alberta.

Loving our stay in this snug, cosy cabin (thanks to friends and family @toesalad and @reneetougas for sharing!) close to Stratton, Maine, US. A foot of fresh snow, temperatures hovering just under zero. @celinetougas gearing up.

I'm skinning up and @toesalad is snowshoeing with his board on his back (obviously). Trying to figure out where we are on the map. New to this area and not sure how we track up the mountain exactly.

So happy @renee and @toesalad are hiking with us - our packs are loaded and we are thankful for a warm clear day to set off on day 1- destination Congdon Shelter- 11.4 miles down (up!) the trail. Start time 11:30.
